Sun, beach, pool: your protection guide · CAOS Art Tattoo
Summer presents unique challenges: intense sun, dry heat, and the temptation of beach and pool. At CAOS Tattoo, we work with international clients who often get tattooed just before heading to the coast, which is why we have perfected this climate-specific guide.
UV rays break down pigment molecules in your skin, causing premature fading, blurry lines, accelerated aging and permanent damage that CANNOT be reversed.
Critical fact: A tattoo exposed to the sun without protection can lose up to 40% of its vibrancy in just 2-3 summers. UV levels in many cities are among the highest in the world due to altitude, thinning ozone layer and pollution.
Golden rule: A $200,000 CLP tattoo deserves a $15,000 CLP sunscreen. The investment in protection is minimal compared to the cost of touch-ups or quality loss.
⏰ NEVER in the first 3 weeks. During initial healing, the skin is an open wound. Sunscreen can cause severe irritation, interfere with healing and introduce chemicals into the dermis.
✓ After 2-3 weeks (when fully healed), start using sunscreen religiously.
No direct sun. No beach/pool. Cover completely with cotton clothing. Shade only.
Limited sun WITH SPF 50+ sunscreen. No submerging in water. Normal activities with caution.
Full freedom, ALWAYS with sunscreen. Sun damages tattoos at any age.
Absolute minimum: 2-3 weeks · Recommended: 4 weeks
Full shower with fresh water, wash with neutral soap, apply moisturizing cream.
Before: Apply water-resistant sunscreen. Avoid heavily chlorinated pools the first times.
In the pool: Short sessions (20-30 min max). Watch for skin reactions.
After: Immediate shower to remove chlorine. Wash with neutral soap. Moisturize generously.
✓ OK after 2 weeks if you cover the tattoo with clothing and use sunscreen if exposed.
Caution: Mountain sun is MORE intense than in cities. SPF 50+ minimum.
❌ Wait at least 4 weeks. Constant rubbing + water + sun = perfect storm to damage the tattoo.
✓ OK with precautions: keep the tattoo away from direct heat, protect from the sun if outdoors during the day.
⚠️ High risk: Direct sun + alcohol (dehydration) = bad combination. Use sunscreen + drink water + seek shade.
Ideal timing: Get tattooed at the END of your beach trip, not at the beginning. If you already got tattooed at the start, avoid beach/pool those weeks.
Alternative: If you already got tattooed and have beach plans — cover with UV clothing, enjoy from the shade, wait to swim. 2 weeks of patience = decades of perfect tattoo.
Weeks 1-2: Avoid intense exercise. If you sweat, wash the tattoo as soon as possible. Wear light cotton clothing.
After 2 weeks: You can resume normal exercise. Wash after sweating.
Dry heat dehydrates faster. Increase to 3-4 cream applications per day. If your skin feels tight, apply more. Drink more water.
❌ MYTH: "A little sun helps healing"
✓ REALITY: Sun ONLY damages. Zero benefits for tattoos.
❌ MYTH: "I can go to the beach if I cover with a waterproof dressing"
✓ REALITY: The dressing generates heat and moisture = breeding ground for bacteria.
❌ MYTH: "Waterproof sunscreen does not need reapplication"
✓ REALITY: ALL sunscreens need to be reapplied every 2 hours.
❌ MYTH: "Dark tattoos do not need sunscreen"
✓ REALITY: ALL tattoos fade without sun protection.
Some summers last only 3 months, but your tattoo will last a lifetime. It is worth it: 2-3 weeks covering the tattoo, investing in quality sunscreen, religious reapplication every 2 hours.
