The First 7 Critical Days

The first 7 days after getting tattooed determine how your tattoo will look for the coming decades. At CAOS Tattoo, after working with clients from 36 countries and 75 cities, we have perfected this protocol that guarantees perfect healing.

Why are these days so important?

During the first week, your skin is in active repair mode. Cells are regenerating, ink is settling into the dermal layers, and your immune system is working to close the "controlled wound" that is a tattoo.

A mistake during these days can cause: Color or ink loss · Blurry lines · Raised scars · Infections (in extreme cases). The damage is often irreversible.

Day-by-Day Protocol

Day 1 — The most critical

The First 24 Hours

Immediately after tattooing: Your artist will cover your tattoo with cling wrap or a specialized dressing. This barrier protects against bacteria and friction.

First 3-5 hours: Keep the dressing on exactly as indicated (maximum 8 hours, never longer).

First wash (critical)

  1. Wash your hands with antibacterial soap
  2. Remove the dressing gently (if stuck, moisten with warm water)
  3. Wash the tattoo with warm water and fragrance-free neutral soap
  4. Use your fingers, NEVER sponges or towels
  5. Rinse completely, leaving no soap residue
  6. Pat dry gently using disposable paper towels

After washing: Let the tattoo air out for 10-15 minutes. Apply a VERY THIN layer of cream — "less is more".

First night: Sleep on clean sheets. If the tattoo rubs against the bed, cover loosely with cling wrap only for sleeping.

Days 2-3 — Exudation phase

Qué esperar: Algo de hinchazón, enrojecimiento, exudación de plasma (transparente o ligeramente amarillento) y exceso de tinta. El tatuaje se verá "brillante" o "húmedo".

Protocol: Wash 2-3 times a day. Apply cream after each wash. Do not let it dry out completely, and do not over-moisturize.

⚠️ Warning signs

  • Redness spreading beyond the tattoo
  • Green or thick yellow pus
  • Fever · Pain that increases en vez de disminuir
Days 4-6 — Scabbing and intense itching

Qué esperar: Formación de costra delgada, picazón intensa (la parte más difícil), tatuaje "opaco" (temporal), piel que se pela.

The golden rule: NEVER SCRATCH.

Day 7 — End of critical phase

Common Myths to Ignore

MITO: "Leave the dressing on for 24 hours"
REALIDAD: Maximum 8 hours (recommended 3-5 hours)

MITO: "Apply lots of cream to heal faster"
REALIDAD: Thin layers. Excess prevents skin from breathing.

MITO: "If it itches, it means it's healing well"
REALIDAD: Itching is normal, but does NOT indicate good healing.

MITO: "You can swim after 3 days if you protect with a dressing"
REALIDAD: Minimum 2 weeks WITHOUT submerging in water.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I exercise?

Light exercise (walking) is fine. Avoid exercise that causes excessive sweating or rubbing of the tattoo for 7 days.

Can I shower normally?

Yes, but: warm water (not hot), short showers, do NOT direct the stream at the tattoo. Pat dry gently.

My tattoo is losing color, is that normal?

Yes. During peeling it may look "dull". Color returns once fully healed (2-4 weeks).

What if I accidentally scratched it?

If it was a light touch, no problem. If you pulled off a scab, wash immediately, apply cream and monitor. May need a minor touch-up.

I'm a tourist, I fly tomorrow. Is that OK?

Yes, flying does not affect healing. Keep up your routine on the plane. Wear loose clothing that does not rub the tattoo.

✓ Signs that everything is going well

  • Redness that decreases day by day
  • Swelling that goes down after day 2-3
  • Itching that appears on day 4-5 (annoying but normal)
  • Thin, even scab
  • Skin that peels naturally without pain

⚠️ Contact your artist or doctor if:

  • Redness spreads beyond the tattoo
  • Swelling increases after day 3
  • Oozing of green, thick yellow, or foul-smelling liquid
  • Fever or chills
  • Pain that increases rather than decreases
  • Red lines coming from the tattoo (sign of infection)

After Day 7: What's Next?

Surface healing is done, but the internal process continues for 2-4 more weeks. Keep moisturizing, gradually resume activities, avoid direct sun and do not swim until completing 3-4 weeks.

Conclusion

The first 7 days require discipline, but the result is worth it: a vibrant, sharp tattoo that will last decades. At CAOS Tattoo, our commitment does not end when you leave the studio. We are available to answer any questions during your healing process.
